Life is like sour patch candy, bitter and sweet. The joys of life can be exhilarating and satisfying (sweet), but the pains of life can be overwhelmingly difficult (bitter). As a defense mechanism, some people build walls in times of trial and shut themselves off from the outside world. They may feel uncomfortable admitting they need help, but feel a type of security and comfort in not letting anyone in. Under the circumstances, building walls may seem like the right thing to do, but it becomes a means of isolation that may prevent you from receiving help from God, and the people whom God uses. In contrast, building bridges promote fellowship, friendship, and favor with God. Bridges draw you closer to the Lord and people who can help you in difficult times.
When the prophet Elijah heard that Jezebel had threatened his life, He became discouraged, and he fell into a state of self-pity (1 Kings 19:1-4); “I, even I only, am left” he cried (1 Kings 19:10). Instead of turning to others for help, Elijah isolated himself in the wilderness and worst of all he asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19:4). However, many servants of God who faced low points in their life knew how to find their way out of despondency and get back on track with the Lord. God sent help to his servant in despair. A word, a touch, and a meal from God were enough to get Elijah back on his journey (1 Kings 19:5-8).
Keeping bridges passable in your life allows you to communicate with God, and express to him how you feel. But more importantly, bridges allow God to minister to your needs. Instead of isolating yourself away from people and God, come out and assemble yourself to a worship service unto God. David said in Psalm 34:1, 3: “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.” While in attendance, release a praise unto God even when things are not ideal in your life. When there is unity with God’s people praising God together, there is strength. During the service, God will send a word for you through his servant. Open your heart and let God’s Word speak comfort and strength to your situation. When God touches you with his Spirit, you will find yourself with a burst of energy to journey on with God on your side. God has not forgotten about you! Don’t give up; because God is not finished with you yet!
